OFA: In the library

Nikola is getting rusty.

But he has a good enough memory that despite the fact that it's been a good twenty years since he sat down at a piano, he's doing a fairly decent job of making his way through Au Claire de la Lune.

He doesn't play well, but he plays with great expression.

"I'm not as omniscient as you. There are things I can't know. I have to deal with them, somehow. Obviously, I lack your faith. Luckily, I have some time to work on that."

Nikola chuckles. "It's been a very long time since I was accused of having faith of any kind."

Will looks at him sheepishly. He really does admire Nikola's strength of character, even if he doesn't quite understand the arrogance. Well, some of it he understands.

"Perhaps my perception is skewed." Will admits.

"Perhaps," Nikola agrees. "What sort of faith do you think I have?"

"The unflappable kind in yourself," Will grins playfully. "I think you'd be one of the first to say you're you, and that makes you both deserving and aware of your own very high limits."

Nikola smirks. "I suppose I can't argue with that."

"Why would you? Why would anyone really?" Will sighs a little enviously. "It is something everyone agrees on. Even with your 'perceived' flaws, you're admired."

"Or forgotten," Nikola says. "Most people anymore have never even heard of me."

Will was thinking more of Watson, Druitt and Helen, but Nikola has a point. "Failure of the educational system or simply the ravages of time?" His mind wanders, then he snaps his fingers. "You were played by David Bowie."

Nikola chuckles. "Yes, I know. I still need to see that one."

"Depending on your singing voice, he might have done you justice."

"I doubt that very much."

Will's throughts drift sleepily to his childhood and an image of Nikola dressed as the Labyrinth's Goblin King makes him laugh out loud.

"Dance Magic Dance isn't really part of your repertoire."

"No," Nikola says dryly. "It really isn't."

Will sits up and kisses Nikola's cheek playfully. "Too bad," he winks.

"Either way, I'm not going to serenade you," Nikola says, pushing Will back down again.

"I will endeavour to contain my disappointment," Will jokes, still amused. Sometimes it's actually nice to be the one person who's not a part of history and portrayed on TV.

Nikola reaches over to trail cool fingers over Will's chest. "I'm sure I can make it up to you in other ways."

He would have shivered simply at the thought but Nikola's fingers make it that much better.

He can't help thinking he's simply gotten lucky. Will grins up towards the ceiling. "Bowie's a pale imitation of the original."

"In every way," Nikola agrees, grinning as well.

So nice to have someone appreciate how amazing he is.

"Do you miss public recognition?" Will asks, his mind wandering. "For your inventions, I mean. If you came up with something that went public now, you wouldn't be able to take credit."

Unless he has a way, which Will really wouldn't put past him.

Nikola smirks at the subject change. "I rarely get recognized for my inventions that are already in the public eye. It'd hardly be a change."

"By nature we work in the shadows," Will repeats the thought of Helen's. Silence is better than ridicule, especially for him. "I suppose the public isn't what I'd ideally like to think it is."

He tends to think the best of everything, even the man he's in bed with that everyone seems so concerned about.

Everyone has good reason to be concerned, despite Will's optimism.

"The public is, as a whole, a creature of very little intelligence. And that's being charitable."
