OFA: In the library

Nikola is getting rusty.

But he has a good enough memory that despite the fact that it's been a good twenty years since he sat down at a piano, he's doing a fairly decent job of making his way through Au Claire de la Lune.

He doesn't play well, but he plays with great expression.

Nikola snorts out a soft laugh. "Yes, something like that."

"And you're the type to make your own luck, fate too, I'm sure." Will can't decide if the confidence came before or after the vampirism.

"I don't believe in fate, actually."

"Oh?" Now Will's intrigued. "Higher beings?" he raises his eyebrows.

"As in some form of deity?" Nikola scoffs. "No."

"Blind luck? Random chance? Little green men?"

"I acknowledge the possibility that somewhere in the universe there may exist a creature who is more powerful than I am. Other than that, I believe we make of our lives whatever we will, and that nature has a distinct chain of superiority that works more often than not."

Will opens his mouth, fails to find anything to say, and takes another moment to compose himself.

"Must make life interesting."

"How so?"

"Knowing with complete certainty that you are, barring a yet undiscovered more powerful force, completely in control of your own destiny. That's something few people would be able to deal with."

Nikola shakes his head. "Destiny is another one of those concepts I don't believe in. Everyone makes choices, and those choices affect everyone around them. Even if there is a more powerful creature somewhere, I'm still in control of my life."

Nikola busts out the Phantom of the Opera theme for that, suddenly and without warning.

Will laughs and shakes his head. "Surely you have more faith in your appearance than that?"

"I always thought the Phantom cut quite a dashing figure. Aside from the disfigurement."

"I've never seen you in a cape," Will offers, picturing it in his head. "You do have an air of mystery. Without the mustache, you don't match many of your old pictures."

"Everyone always brings up the mustache," he says with a smirk.

"It almost brings up itself," Will jokes. He's never been good at facial hair, can't get anything good himself, and he can't look at an old picture of Tesla without wondering what it would feel like.

"It was rather a defining feature," Nikola replies, smiling like he knows exactly what Will is thinking.

Will can't pry his eyes away. He knows he should, but he can't get his mind to leave the idea alone.

"It was. I think now one looks at your eyes more."

Nikola's tongue flicks out over his lips. "Does one? And what does one think of said eyes?"

One tries not to think of them, too much.

"They're stunning." Simple, but completely true.

Nikola smirks deeply, almost a grin. "Are they indeed."

It's not so much a question as a confirmation.

Aside from the taser-like effect that Will happily suffers when he looks at them too long, Nikola's eyes are distractingly bright. Beautiful. Will forces himself to keep looking.

"Yes, they really are."
