OFA: In the library

Nikola is getting rusty.

But he has a good enough memory that despite the fact that it's been a good twenty years since he sat down at a piano, he's doing a fairly decent job of making his way through Au Claire de la Lune.

He doesn't play well, but he plays with great expression.

Will nods, slightly pleased that it's survived, even if it hasn't been played yet.

"Think anything from our time will survive nearly that long?"

Will chuckles. "I believe in Spock," he says jovially. "I don't think you're talking about live long and prosper."

"I was thinking more of Next Generation. They had rather a love affair with the 20th century."

"Patrick Stewart and the robot who wanted to be real?" he didn't watch that one as much. He did get into Deep Space Nine.

"It does seem like we'll be remembered as the era that only cared about themselves."

"I think that could be said about a lot of eras," Nikola points out. "If the Victorians had developed space operas, they'd have been full of grandfather clocks and obsessed with Dickens."

"Dickens is just depressing. I mean, I try to be understanding about the time period but it just seems so much more depressing than it needs to be." Will culls that rant by kissing Nikola's collarbone. It's a spot he likes.

Nikola smirks at that and cards his fingers through Will's hair. "I'm beginning to think you have a thing for older men in general."

"I do need to be intellectually stimulated," Will realises how that sounds and bites his own lip. "I like the history. The idea that there's more than I can understand."

Nikola arches an eyebrow. "You like not being able to understand?"

Congratulations, Will. You've just said something Nikola Tesla can't comprehend.

"I like the mystery. Sometimes, there are some people," Will doesn't know how to say it politely. "I'm sure you meet some people who are open books to you. I like having a challenge."

"I like a challenge too," Nikola says. Otherwise, he'd have given up on Helen long ago. "But the idea of there being something I can't know? That doesn't appeal to me."

"I'm not as omniscient as you. There are things I can't know. I have to deal with them, somehow. Obviously, I lack your faith. Luckily, I have some time to work on that."

Nikola chuckles. "It's been a very long time since I was accused of having faith of any kind."

Will looks at him sheepishly. He really does admire Nikola's strength of character, even if he doesn't quite understand the arrogance. Well, some of it he understands.

"Perhaps my perception is skewed." Will admits.

"Perhaps," Nikola agrees. "What sort of faith do you think I have?"

"The unflappable kind in yourself," Will grins playfully. "I think you'd be one of the first to say you're you, and that makes you both deserving and aware of your own very high limits."

Nikola smirks. "I suppose I can't argue with that."

"Why would you? Why would anyone really?" Will sighs a little enviously. "It is something everyone agrees on. Even with your 'perceived' flaws, you're admired."

"Or forgotten," Nikola says. "Most people anymore have never even heard of me."

Will was thinking more of Watson, Druitt and Helen, but Nikola has a point. "Failure of the educational system or simply the ravages of time?" His mind wanders, then he snaps his fingers. "You were played by David Bowie."

Will's throughts drift sleepily to his childhood and an image of Nikola dressed as the Labyrinth's Goblin King makes him laugh out loud.

"Dance Magic Dance isn't really part of your repertoire."
