Nikola is getting rusty.

But he has a good enough memory that despite the fact that it's been a good twenty years since he sat down at a piano, he's doing a fairly decent job of making his way through Au Claire de la Lune.

He doesn't play well, but he plays with great expression.

The hairs on the back of Will's neck start to stand up, like he's in an electrical storm. He's out of his league, but he's not backing down. Even if this time, he ends up somewhere he never thought he'd be.

His hand moves of its own accord, hovering just apart from Nikola's waist. "Would have run if I didn't."

"That would have been a mistake," Nikola says, not quite leaning towards Will's hand.

"Never show your fear, the predator already knows what you're thinking?" Will wonders, moving his hand enough that he can almost feel Nikola's shirt. He can imagine it anyway.

He shakes his head. "As a predator, if you ran, I'd have to chase you. Instinct."

"And if I don't run?" Will wonders. "Does that mean you've already caught me?"

Nikola smirks. "There's more than one kind of chase."

The shivering sensation runs cold up his spine. He's never felt this alive, yet, he could be facing his doom.

"Only one apex predator."

He grins. "That too."

He could surrender, but he'd rather go down fighting. Nikola's shirt is softer than Will expected and he's acutely aware of the wrinkle touching his palm and the fact that the tiniest bit of pressure will put him in contact with the flesh beneath.

Nikola's lack of a pulse makes Will's seem that much louder in his ears.

Nikola just watches him, his gaze steady, waiting for that bit of pressure to come. The race of Will's pulse has his own speeding gradually.

To Will's surprise, his fingers don't tremble. In fact, they seem to connect with Nikola as if drawn with a magnet. It could be entirely unsexual, just a random connection.

But it's not. Goosebumps break out along Will's arms.

Nikola's eyes slide lazily from Will's face to his hand and back slowly, taking note of the goosebumps. His own cool fingers move to trail up Will's forearm.

Moving would break the spell, and there's nowhere else Will would rather be. Nikola's fingers feel ghostly against his skin, and his shiver turns into a tiny sigh.

"We've been through this bit before, William," Nikola says quietly, his voice low and even. "Will it go differently this time?"

Nikola deserves better than an excuse. "I fucked up," he begins. "Anything between you and me should be just about us. Bring Magnus into it-" he pauses and a really terrible, yet, fascinating thought passes through his mind.

"I haven't been attracted to a man before. Not enough, not like this, and I was grasping at straws."

"Does it frighten you?" Nikola asks, his hand sliding up further. "Being attracted to me?"

"Yes," Will says simply. Licking his lips doesn't help because his mouth is suddenly dry. "I tried to convince myself I was in control when I was anything but."

His hand rests on Will's shoulder. "What exactly couldn't you control?"

"Myself." He's always tried to do things by the book. Stable, heathy relationships that usually fall apart because he can't reconcile his nightmares. Desperate sexual wanting doesn't usually factor in.

"Wanting something just leads to disappointment, doesn't it?"

"Not always," Nikola murmurs. His tongue flicks out over his lips as his fingers slide up Will's neck.

Will wonders if he'd feel this alive seconds before he was about to die, and decides that thus far, this is as close as he'll get. His other hand moves up to rest on Nikola's hip.

"Oh?" he stammers.

There's the tiniest hint of electricity in the fingers sliding over the back of Will's neck.

"Sometimes when you get what you want, it exceeds all expectations."

Will, who usually notices everything, is entirely lost in Nikola. As if the other man has become his whole universe. His hands slide up a few centimeters at a time.

"The ultimate loss of control," he sighs. "Getting exactly what you want."
